By the time kathryn was in high school, having studied piano, voice, and a little flute, she had committed to memory multiple musicals and rock albums and was equally inspired by julie andrews, roberta flack, carole king, and barbara streisand. from 1998 to 2013, Kathryn taught piano and children's classes at the steckman studio of music in oak park, and Since 2003 she has taught piano in her home studio.
Before writing four collective biographies for the chicago review press (2011, 2014, 2016, 2018), Kathryn's poems were published in various online and print journals. this work eventually led her to write two original compositions now part of the chicago history in song program: 'the song of the potawatomi' and 'the shining white ship: a song of the eastland disaster.'
John was learning piano and trumpet when the beatles appeared on the ed sullivan show. he subsequently learned to play guitar and formed a high school rock band. This combination of experience led to his learning string bass which he played in a stage band and even a short stint with the university of chicago orchestra. his experience has ranged from solo and ensemble work to composition and arrangement. john is the technical assistant and sounding board for kathryn during the creation of the history singers programs.
John has a bachelor's in history and kathryn a bachelor's in english literature with a minor in history. the history singers programs combine their dual passions for music and history.
